Welcome to Grove Street United Methodist Church in Petersburg West Virginia. Our church was dedicated on June 18th, 1917 as a United Brethren Church and we have been striving to make disciples for Jesus Christ ever since. Through mergers, we became an Evangelical United Brethren Church in 1946 and then a United Methodist Church in 1968. Through it all, we have been a welcoming place for people to come and learn more about the saving grace of Jesus Christ and find a place to call home. We invite you to join us for worship at 9:30 am at our Grove Street location every Sunday morning.

We gather each week to worship together as a family. We believe that through Jesus we are indeed all brothers and sisters so whether you are a first time visitor or a lifelong member you are part of our family when you walk through our doors. Our worship services follow a rather traditional style. Following a special time with the children who are present in worship the children are invited to attend Children’s Church if they so desire. On the First Sunday of each month (as well as special times throughout the year), we celebrate Holy Communion during worship. As with all United Methodist Churches, our Communion is open to everyone who wishes to share in the sacrificial meal of Jesus Christ including children.
We offer a variety of programs to serve the community of Petersburg. Our church hosts Alcoholics Anonymous groups every Saturday night; sponsors a Cub Scout and a Boy Scout Troop; Homemakers Club; and is used by a variety of community groups for periodic programs and events.

At Grove Street United Methodist Church we view growing in the knowledge and love of the Lord as a lifelong process that goes beyond simply attending worship. We offer a variety of educational experiences to enhance our faith journey. Each Sunday following worship we offer Sunday School classes for ages 3 through adult (two different adult classes are offered each Sunday). Also each week there is a Women’s Bible Study on Monday mornings at 11:00 am; a Wednesday Evening Prayer and Share Bible Study at 5:45 pm; and on the Second and Fourth Thursday Evening a Bible Study is offered at 6:30 pm. Studies are also offered at other times periodically.
We also offer Youth Fellowship Programming on the Second and Fourth Sunday evenings at 6:00 pm. We offer two groups, our Younger Youth Fellowship which is offered for Grades 1 – 6 and out Older Youth Fellowship for Grades 7 – 12. These groups focus on learning and fellowship as well as doing projects to assist others who are in need.
Music has always been an integral part of “Methodism” and at Grove Street UMC our Choir plays an important part in our worship service on Sunday morning. Our Adult Choir, though currently small in numbers, provides an inspirational message each week through music. They rehearse on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 pm. Our Sunday School Choir, which rehearses each Sunday at 11:00 am, also adds their voices of praise during each Sunday service. During July and August, a variety of members share their musical talents in worship by providing special music for us.
We share from time to time in mission projects and are looking ahead to the time when we will offer group mission projects regularly to help those who are in need. One of the projects that we do lend a great deal of support to is The Burlington United Methodist Family Services locate just north of us (about 19 miles) in Burlington West Virginia. In addition to monetary support, each fall members volunteer time to help with the renowned Burlington Apple Festival in late September.
The Petersburg Interfaith Food Pantry is housed in the former church parsonage right next door to our church. We help staff this important community ministry to those in need on a rotational basis with other churches of the community. When people volunteer at the food pantry they sort food, stock shelves, and on days when the food pantry is open distribute food. Clients are referred to and screened by The Community Action Program or in emergencies by local churches. Volunteers also help conduct food collections throughout the year to keep the food pantry stocked. Anyone interested in assisting with this project as well as any other inquiries for the Food Pantry may call Wanda Myers at 304-257-3658.
